Introducing our newest faculty members:

Albert de la Tierra

Assistant Professor, Criminal Justice Studies (Visiting)

Albert de la Tierra is a critical ethnographer whose work aims to understand how lived experiences are involved with broader relations of power. He is receiving his Ph.D. in Sociology from the Graduate Center at the City University of New York, where he also completed advanced certificate programs in Critical Theory and Women and Gender Studies. His current project, Strength in the Hood, produces a situated understanding of how “street workout” brings attention to men of color in ways that counter racialized surveillance and discursive criminalization. His most recent publications can be found in Feminist Criminology and Critical Issues in Justice and Politics. He teaches courses in criminological theory, qualitative research design and gender studies.

Jennifer Reck

Assistant Professor, Sociology & Sexuality Studies

Jennifer ReckJen Reck earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from UC Santa Cruz in 2005 and worked as a lecturer in SF State's Deparetment of Sociology & Sexuality Studies from 2006 to 2019. Her research interests include criminalization of homelessness, queer community space and gentrification.  Her current projects include an introductory research methods text and research examining the relation between queer neighborhood development and criminalization of homelessness in San Francisco. She teaches courses on queer and trans cultures, research methods and writing in Sociology. She helped develop SF State's Center for Equity and Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CEETL) and participates in ongoing CEETL projects emphasizing equity-based pedagogy and developing collaborative faculty relationships focused on teaching.
