In Memoriam, Prof. Peter Garabedian
Peter Garabedian, professor emeritus of Sociology, died on March 18. He joined the Navy at the age of 17, served during WWII, then received his BA from the University of Redlands and his MA (1956) and PhD (1959) from the University of Washington. He taught at several universities before coming to SF State in 1968. He became emeritus in 1992.
Pete's field was criminology. His dissertation was on "Western Penitentiary: a study of social organization," and he was the author of Becoming Delinquent: Young Offenders and the Correctional Process (1980) and several journal articles on correctional institutions.
Pete's parents were survivors of the Armenian genocide, and Pete was deeply steeped in Armenian history, writing his family memoir, drawing upon ten boxes of his family’s letters and documents translated from Armenian.
