Assistant Professor of Sociology Valerie Francisco-Menchavez gave a talk titled, “Fight or Flight: Resistance and Migration in Filipino American History” at the University of Portland, co-sponsored by the Diversity and Inclusion Programs and the Filipino American Student Association, which connected the theme of October’s Filipino American History Month to her recently published book, “The Labor of Care: Filipina Migrants and Transnational Families in the Digital Age.” This student-led initiative engaged the book’s main concepts of migration and transnational Filipino experience to their experience as a small but formidable Filipino American population in Portland.
