Assistant Professor in Transgender/LGBTQ Studies

San Francisco State University, Department of Sociology and Sexuality Studies offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Transgender/LGBTQ Studies in August 2020. We seek a colleague whose teaching and research interests include Transgender Identity, Community and/or Movements. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, through diversity, to the excellence of the academic community.

 

The Department of Sociology and Sexuality Studies is home to one of the first programs to offer courses in Sexuality Studies, in the early 1970s. We aim to not only understand and discuss issues relating to sexuality, but also to create discourse for policies, services and resources to address the many facets of sexuality. The mission of Sexuality Studies at SF State is to advance multidisciplinary teaching, research, and advocacy in sexuality studies, sexual literacy, well-being and social justice. We provide students with knowledge about processes and variations in sexual cultures, sexual identities and gender role formation, and the social, cultural, historical, and ethical foundations of sexuality, intimate relationships, and sexual health. We have a long commitment of building collaborative relationships with community members and organizations that serve marginalized communities nationally and transnationally. Across all of our research and education efforts, we focus on issues of social justice and sexual rights for all, considering sexual well-being and sexual health across the lifespan.

Responsibilities

We seek a scholar who will contribute to this growing field of study on and off campus. Additionally, this position will fill established courses like Introduction to Transgender Studies (SXS 458); Perspectives in Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies (SXS 301), as well as our Graduate Theory course, Sociocultural Foundations in Human Sexuality (SXS 800). In addition to teaching and mentoring in our Sexuality Studies curriculum, we hope that the new hire could teach some of our existing courses related to Transgender and/or LGBTQ Studies in our undergraduate program in Sociology, including Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual transgender and Queer Cultures in Society (SOC 467/SXS 667) and develop new courses in their area of expertise, building contemporary and cutting-edge curriculum for our students.

 

Qualifications:

Required:

·         Ph.D. in Social Science or Interdisciplinary Field (e.g. Sociology, Women and Gender Studies, Public Health, etc.). Terminal degree must be completed by the first day of employment.

·         Record of working and communicating effectively with colleagues and students

 

Preferred:

·         Record of teaching contributions in the areas of: Transgender Studies, LGBTQ Studies, Queer Theory, Research Methods, and Composition

·         Active record of scholarship and research related to Transgender Studies

·         Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching, and/or scholarship/creative works

·         Experience teaching and working closely with students from historically under-represented communities, including LGBTQ

·         Record of contributing to collegial, supportive and collaborative work environments
